"Learning To Glide" Killer Whales

"One of the most memorable trips I took was to the Robson Bight in the Johnstone Strait off the coast of British Columbia. This trip was specifically to find and photograph orca's or Killer Whales. My wife and I did not have many opportunities to see the whales, but the opportunities we had were fantastic. Learning to glide is really about two moments combined into one painting. The first moment is when a pod of whales passed within one to two hundred yards of us. I can not express how exhilarating it was to be so close to nature and see them glide effortlessly through the water. The second was one morning while on shore we could hear the the whales in the mist surfacing and expelling air, but could not see them through the mist. I stood watching beyond the rock point hoping to catch a glimpse with camera in hand ready to capture that perfect shot. The whales never did appear that day so I decided to make the perfect shot myself. After all, I am an artist! "Learning to Glide" is the combination of the two experiences wrapped up into that one perfect moment." |
