" Alaskan Monarch" Workshop

Alaskan Monarch

This workshop is designed to teach students how to break down complex shapes to create detail. We will focus on using colour and direction to create soft intricate shapes and take the fear out of detail painting. This painting also shows how to use "scubbling" a technique used to create soft defused backgrounds and soft graphic shapes. This workshop shows the student how to attack a painting and break it down to basic shape and then how to finish off with detail. We will mix colours, prepare boards, block in, create detail and learn how to finish coat in this workshop. This is a start to finish production.

Participating students will need a set of acrylic paints or oils (note that drying time is a hindrance in applying these techniques). Please bring the palette that you are comfortable with, a full list of my palette is available. One painting surface 8 x 12, I will be using primed masonite, please use what you are comfortable with. I will supply a reference template for transferring the image to board.

Day 1
We will start with breaking the painting down into basic shape and colour. We will then mix our base colours together and set up our boards for painting.

Day 2
In this section we will start to break down our large shapes and start to create our shape and form. At this stage we will ignore all detail and concentrate on building up our form.

Day 3
We will now start to create detail. We will learn to "scubble" the background and create a "defused" look. Students will need an old beat up brush, I will bring several extras.

Day 4
Now we will paint our final detail and learn to protect and cat our finished artwork.
